found here. Just brings back good memories of when I palled around with Dad

Back To Lists

Here it is, Wed., the last day of August. Had a mental list of things to do this week, well, it is gone. Guess I had better go back to writing it down. I do remember tomorrows, though. Defrost the refrigerator. I remember that one because I dislike that job immensely.

I hope to know by today or tomorrow if my son will be coming up this weekend. If he comes, my plan is to cook some green chili in a black pot. The plan is to clean under the work bench in the garage. Wow, now I remember what I was going to do today, clean out the west side of the garage.

Watching the news about New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, I do know I am grateful for being inland. I feel so bad for my friends in Gulfport. A tough recovery for sure.

Finished

I finished the mowing before it hit 90 today. For that I am eternally grateful. I also missed the garter snake this time. I was going slow enough to stop and let him slither away.

One of the PBS shows I enjoy is the detective one. Watched with interest the one on Calf Creek Arrow. The one on Goring's Gun was interesting also.

PBS

The 5000+ year old bison skull was donated to a Natural History museum in Norman OK., just a hop and a skip from where my son lives. I am planning on visiting the museum on my next trip south.

I have almost reached the half way point with the afghan. The problem on these hot days is it's bulk. Just too hot to have it on your lap. So, now, I have an excuse to watch TV in the evenings, with the window unit on. Mom has central air downstairs but being as old and frail as she is, does not feel the heat like I do.

Comments always welcome.

Gone Mowing

It got too hot yesterday to mow so that is on for this morning. Took Mom's Buick to get serviced so while it was out, cleaned out that side of the garage. Got pretty hot in there. Cut up and hauled branches to the dump and tried to dispose of the recycle items but the trailer had been taken to be emptied. Hope it is back today.

Did get an email from my Gulfport friends. They ended up going to Fl. as she has a brother there. I am afraid they will have quite a mess at home. Of course, don' t know when they can even get back to check.
This has pretty much decided me, when I get back to Texas I will not go back to the coast. Will look for a place within 100 miles of San Antonio, or closer.

Fall is Just Around the Corner

Though you would never know it by the 90 degree temp. due this afternoon. But the Black Walnut tree is losing it's leaves. It is the tree that loses it's leaves first in this area. Was a little early and the recent rain has put it on hold a little but the beginning is here.. The green black walnuts on the ground play havoc with my mowing. Have moved the mower deck up a notch hight to miss them. Thinking of taking a bucket and picking some up as a new form of exercise. Will get gas today and mow the back 40.

I feel so sorry for the people on the gulf coast having to deal with Katrina. Sure hope not many, if any, deaths. The surge will be the roughest with the rain and all the water that surrounds New Orleans. Will the levees hold? Wind at my friends place in Gulfport will be the "bad guy" there.

Took Mom's Buick in to be serviced. Probably had not been done in years, but, of course, had not been driven much over the past 5 years. Since she does not drive, think she would just as soon leave it set but I have started using it once a week just to keep it going. Might as well.

Wicked Looking

I just checked the Hurricane Page on Weatherunderground. Katrina is a bad babe with well formed eye. I have friends who have fled Gulfport, Mississippi. It's going to be rough on the Gulf Coast for sure. New Orleans will have a tough road to hoe, or bail, I should say.

Did snag a few things at auction. Now, if I can just sell them. That is the trick. Found an antique store that will take consignments so may try a garage sale and if they don't sell, take them there. It is a plan anyway.

My last loaf of sourdough bread had the right "tang" to it but I still am not satisfied the way it turned out. But need to cut down on bread consumption again. Here it is, a lazy Sunday I guess. Just don't feel like doing "nuttin'".

Auction

Going to check out an auction or two today. Have been keeping my eye out for a drafting table and one of the community colleges in the area is getting rid of surplus items and they listed three. My assumption is they will be the big ones, but you never know.

Heading Into the Weekend

Early morning thunder boomers again. The wind hit first, then the rain. It did not last long and now, moving into a hot muggy day on the high plains.

I did get some garage sale pricing done yesterday and hope to finish up today. Fed the sourdough starter last night so will do either Sourdough Country French Bread or some Cinnamon Rolls..Guess I wil make up my mind when I get to the kitchen. Will cook either one off in a DO. Or at least, that is the plan.

Oldest son mentioned coming up for a day or so over the Labor Day weekend. That would be nice. Said for me to plan a project he can help me with. Well, I have two planned and time for some cooking to boot, so hope he makes it. I am not counting on it though.

Another couple of rows finished on the afghan. This particular one is done working on the long side which is about 66 inches long, so two rows take a minute or two, for sure.

Coffee tasted so good this morning. Had mixed Columbian and French Roast together, mmmmm, good stuff.

Character Flaws

The crocheting project is moving right along. My goal is to have it finished before I take another trip South. I figured out how many rows per week I would need to do for that event to transpire and it certainly seems "doable". When I first started I found the directions harder than I thought it would be to follow. In fact, within the first couple of rows I did tear out stitches for quite a ways back and redo. Now, the rule is, unless it is a short ways back, it becomes a "charater flaw" in the piece, making it uniquely mine. The afghan only a mother could love.

Over the years I have found that one has to be in a certain mood to sit down and price garage sale items. Yesterday, I was in that mood. Last week I had picked up colored stickies and this week had purchased the string tags. Yesterday was the day. I started with a few items needing string tags. Then, sticky tag time. What???? no sticky tags....but I saw them right here just this morning. I moved things, looked every where. No tags to be found. Well, I know how to solve that problem, go buy new tags, then they will show up (but will I be in the mood to tag things?). Trotted off to the local drugstore. Bought the new tags. Sat down to start tagging and what was the first thing I saw, the old box of tags, right where they had fallen and I swear to you I looked there a million times yesterday. 'Bout ready to join Mom and just sit on the porch.

Now I have to either finish the tagging or at least move the boxes. Severe weather possible tonight and I want to put the Baby Truck in the garage. She got a tad bit of hail early this morning.

Awakened

The low rumble of thunder finally permeated my brain and had to get up and close truck windows. Now, guess I had better get off. Rain just hit and lightning is bouncing around a lot closer!

The Barter

I took one of the loaves out to the folks who do the farming for us. Came back with half a dozen ears of corn, 8 tomatoes, 3 cukes and one large bell pepper. Mom said that loaf was sure worth a lot.

It has been nice cool mornings for which I am very grateful. A harbinger of fall. In Nebraska I do believe fall is my favorite season, in Texas it has to be Spring, I guess because spring comes so quickly after Christmas.

Today is break the bank day as I need to get gas. Hope things are resolved some before it is trip time, but I have my doubts.

This Afternoon

This Afternoon

This is my afternoon results. Wish there was Smell-a-computer. Hopefully

when cut they will not be too dense. Most of the fast rise are somewhat

dense and this was a fast rise recipe. I guess I have had enough fun with

adding photos to the blog. I know in the future when I have a New Computer

things will work much better! At least that is the plan.

Trying to post to Blog with a picture via email. See if this works...

Grrrrr for August

I have tried everything to upload pictures. Have a Flickr account..followed directions but the Blog This button does not show up. Checked the Help area. Said I probably needed a newer version of Flash. Attempted that download and install. At one point said it was successful, at another, said it failed. I have had the computer in the shop several weeks ago, it is "sort of" fixed. Think I need a new one but not the $$ to do it now. So will try to get a picture of my first half assed picture this way.

Stopping By

It has been a long time since I have been here. Just could not get into doing this again. Will see if I can get it up and keep it going.

After returning from Texas in July hit a long depression. I did go house sit for my nephew in Lincoln for a week around th 8 of August. That was a pretty good break. Took care of their animals while they had a vacation. They live on the outskirts of the city on a couple of acres. It had been part of a nursery so there are still neat plants, trees and wild life around. It is a deadend street with not too many other neighbors so pretty quiet to. One other nephew lives in Lincoln so I did invite him over and cooked cornish games hens in a black pot. It was really good. Then we met downtown and attended a Ribfest one afternoon. This year ate what the Aussies cooked up. It was pretty tasty but then, I have never met a rib I did not like!

While there I did go to some of the antique stores and that reinforced the "I still like the 'stuff' but don't want to be tied down running a shop full time" feeling. At least not now.

My projects have increased but I have not increased the time I put to them. They are:

Painting in Pastels
Crocheting (started an afghan)
Writing
Repair a possum-bellied bakers table

My son from OK City stopped in for an overnight stay. He and his girlfriend and one of her boys had been in Colorado. It was so nice to have company. Cooked alot in the Black Pots.
My favorite cousin and his new bride were out for a day in July also. They live in Ft. Collins, Co. Had a good time with him and his new wife is delightful!
Mom seems the most healthy now, since I have been here which is coming on a year and a half. Mentally, she seems to be declining. She did not recognize my son who took care of her right after she got out of the hospital and came up a couple of times. Then after some talk she said she did. Blamed me for not telling her his last name.
Actually I have plenty to do, it is just getting up every morning and doing something. Some days it is good and some days, not.
